Storm Darcy: blackout warning when a big frost hits Britain

FLow temperatures and “significant” snowfall could cause blackouts and cuts in water, gas and mobile phone coverage in some parts of the country this week.

Storm Darcy brought heavy snow and hurricane force winds to the south and east of England on Sunday, with icy conditions to linger in Britain for the entire week.

Thousands of people were left without power after power outages hit homes in East Anglia, South and West Yorkshire and Durham, while roads were likened to “skating rinks” when the snow fell.

Forecasters warned that “long outages” in power, gas and water supplies are likely to occur starting Monday in London, the south-east and east of England, along with disruptions in phone services and mobile coverage.

Simon Partridge of the Met Office said the risk of further blackouts would remain for much of the week.

“The situation with the power outages may improve slightly because the wind speed is likely to decrease, but it is debatable whether we will see something softer at the end of the week,” he said.
