Breaking travel news: UK should invest in airport testing, not quarantine, says industry chief

WWhile air passenger traffic is certainly minimal, international travelers are still arriving at UK airports, he writes. Hazelnut Plush. But how many exactly?

It is a difficult figure to pin down, mainly because Heathrow Airport, the UK’s airport with the most traffic, only publishes its statistics on a monthly basis. Figures for January are not due until February 8, so we only have data for December.

In December, Heathrow saw an average of 17,000 inbound passengers per day from international destinations. The figures for January, with Lockdown 3 and no Christmas “rush”, are likely to be much lower.

When combined with international arrival data from Gatwick Airport (approximately 750 per day) and Manchester Airports Group (200 additional), the figure almost tips 18,000. However, all the airport sources we have spoken to say that these are very rough estimates and that the numbers vary a lot every day.

Of course, these are not the only airports that host international arrivals, but the current total probably does not exceed 20,000 passengers per day.

So how many new quarantined hotel rooms will be required per day? The vast majority of those 20,000 passengers come from places without travel bans, so they would not have to isolate themselves in a quarantine hotel. And, ahead of the possible release date (February 15), we are likely to see an increase in returning citizens, eager to return to the UK before the rules change.

So the number of hotel rooms required per day? It’s likely in the lower hundreds, if that.
