Former senior White House adviser Jared Kushner and his deputy have been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.
Son-in-law of Donald trump and his deputy Avi Berkowitz were nominated by one of the former US president’s lawyers for their role in negotiating four normalization agreements between Israel and Arab nations known as the “Abraham Accords.”
The deals are considered the most important diplomatic breakthroughs in the Middle East in 25 years and were announced over a four-month period between August and December last year.
The US attorney who nominated them, Alan Dershowitz, previously defended Trump in his first impeachment trial.
In his letter to the Nobel committee, Dershowitz also cited the work of former US ambassador to Israel David Friedman and former Israeli ambassador to the US Ron Dermer on normalization agreements.
It seemed to suggest that Kushner’s nomination could be controversial.
“The Nobel Peace Prize is not for popularity,” he wrote.
“Nor is it an assessment of what the international community may think of those who helped achieve peace. It is an award for meeting the daunting criteria set out by Alfred Nobel in his will.”
The 40-year-old Kushner said in a statement that he was honored to be nominated for the award, which will be presented in October.
He and Berkowitz were key figures in negotiating agreements between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco.
However, the administration of President Joe Biden is expected to review all national security agreements reached during the Trump administration, including arms packages for the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.
Trump’s controversial departure from office may hurt Kushner’s hopes of winning the Nobel Prize.
Dershowitz said in a Wall Street Journal article on Jan.20 that the Senate should dismiss the impeachment article against Trump for the Jan.6 assault on the U.S. Capitol because he is no longer president.
