Rules for people entering the UK could be toughened later, and the government is expected to enforce hotel quarantine in England for some arrivals. Currently, people arriving in the UK must test negative before leaving and then self-isolate for 10 days upon arrival. This can be reduced to five days in England after a second negative test. But it is feared that not everyone will follow the rules, so now people could be told to stay in hotels, where isolation will be enforced. It is believed that the rules will definitely apply to UK citizens and residents arriving from South Africa, South America and Portugal (foreign nationals are already prohibited from arriving from those “high risk” areas). The rules may apply to other countries as well. And people are expected to have to pay their own way. Although each part of the UK sets its own travel rules, Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon has said that a “four-nation” approach is being discussed. Here’s a glimpse of last year’s hotel quarantine in Australia.
