VThe president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, has announced that the country’s public medical system has presented what he described as a “miracle” drug that, according to him, is “100% effective in neutralizing Covid.” James badcock reports from Madrid.
Speaking on television, Maduro held up a bottle of a drug called Carvativir, which he claimed had been shown to be a complete remedy against Covid-19 during nine months of research and clinical trials in patients.
“Ten drops under the tongue every four hours and the miracle occurs,” Maduro said, stating that the “powerful antiviral” had cured all kinds of Covid patients, including those using respirators.
However, little is known about the drug, although Maduro said Venezuelan authorities would send information to the WHO.
Meanwhile, Maduro said that Venezuela would begin mass-producing the drug and that it would be available to countries that belong to the ALBA bloc of countries, including Cuba, Bolivia and Nicaragua.
But there is likely to be considerable skepticism towards the announcement of a nonconformist leader criticized by much of the international community for shutting down the democratic process in Venezuela as the country’s economy collapses.
