Jurgen Klopp hints at frustration with Liverpool’s transfer stance in January

Jurgen Klopp has admitted that it is not his decision whether Liverpool can make a move in the January transfer window.

The Reds fell in their third Premier League loss of the season on Thursday night when Burnley ended a 68-game unbeaten streak at Anfield.

Ashley Barnes’ late penalty was enough to bring down a Premier League streak dating back to April 2017 and the result leaves the champions six points behind leader Manchester United.

Calls for Klopp to enter the market this month have increased to alleviate the central shortage that has plagued Liverpool throughout the season.

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez face uphill battles to play any role this season, while Joel Matip, the club’s only senior center-back, has missed much of the season due to injury.

However, Klopp says those plans are out of his hands as the owners of the Fenway Sports Group club continue to take a careful approach to finances during the coronavirus pandemic.

“These decisions are not my decisions,” Klopp said.

“If anyone thinks we should do something, I can’t decide if we do something in the transfer market or not. That should be clear.

“But that’s not something I’m thinking about. It’s just that with this group we can play a lot better. That’s my concern.

“That is what I am thinking about. Confidence is not at the highest level, that is so obvious, it can be seen in games and specific moments.

“A lot, I’d say 95 or 90 percent of everything the guys did all the time is still there, plus 10 percent at the moment.

“So now it’s about fixing this 10 percent and that’s what it is. For now, we have to dig a little deeper to get that back.”
