WWomen are more likely to have been forced to close their businesses by the pandemic in all regions of the world, the data suggests, as experts warned they risk being left further behind unless action is taken.
Women were about six percent more likely to have had to close their small businesses during the pandemic, reports from 26,000 businesses in 50 countries have shown.
In sub-Saharan Africa, 41 percent of women-owned businesses closed versus 34 percent of those owned by men, and in Latin America and the Caribbean, 40 percent versus 29 percent.
Women who are employed also seem to be suffering more because in many countries the sectors in which they tend to work are overexposed to the economic collapse caused by Covid-19, according to emerging data studied by experts from the Center for Global Development (CGD). .
Megan O’Donnell, who will lead a new Covid-19 Gender and Development Initiative at CGD that focuses on low- and middle-income countries, said: “Before the impact of Covid-19, women’s participation in the force Employment, access to finance, pay, and advancement was already uneven for men, and the pandemic and global recession are expected to exacerbate these gaps.
