secondRitons will not be allowed to take non-essential travel starting Wednesday after Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a third national shutdown.
“You should not leave your home unless you have a reasonable excuse (for example, for work or educational reasons),” states government guidance. The full legislation will be released tomorrow and the restrictions are expected to be in effect until March or April.
Wales and Northern Ireland already had lockdown rules, and Scotland joined England in issuing a stay-at-home order. Airlines are expected to begin canceling flights that will depart in January and February.
Paul Charles, CEO of the travel consultancy PC Agency, predicted that vacations abroad will be limited until early May.
“Travel will continue to be severely restricted in March as the vaccine program will still be running,” he said.
He added that travel companies and airlines should focus on making reservations in the coming weeks, traditionally the busiest booking period of the year, so that crucial revenue arrives long before people travel.
Both Abta, the travel association, and Airlines UK pointed to the need for financial backing for the troubled travel industry. An Abta spokesperson said: “Westminster’s support has been needed for a long time, and we urge ministers to address this gap urgently.”
