‘All we want is for schools to be safe’: teacher video goes viral

As the dispute over school closures continues, a teacher’s opinion on the matter has gone viral.

In his video, which has been shared more than 12,000 times, he says: “First of all, we don’t want schools to close. That is the absolute last resort. All we want is for schools to be safe, safe for us as staff, safe for our students, and I think most of us feel right now, given the skyrocketing infection rate and the lack of resources available to schools. We just can’t make it safe at the moment. “

He emphasizes that schools will not be completely closed, as they will be open to key workers and vulnerable children, and responds to some of the comments made about teachers during the ongoing pandemic.

“Let me make this clear, teachers will still be in class with those key and vulnerable child laborers, teaching them while also having to provide online learning for those at home. That is so hard, so much harder, and so much more work, so no teacher is going to choose that unless it is absolutely necessary. It is simply a case of safety, making sure staff are safe, students are safe, and their families are safe. That’s it. Teachers don’t want to shut down unless absolutely necessary to keep our school communities safe, that’s all.

“So please stop jumping on the train thinking that teachers just can’t be bothered, we just want schools to close, we don’t.”
