Large numbers of armed police officers rushed to a London building amid reports of a hostage situation.
Metropolitan Police officers were in front of Selbourne House, south of the River Thames in Southwark, at 9:20 p.m. tonight.
The force said a threat was made to an officer when they were called to the scene this afternoon.
Currently, unsubstantiated reports of a hostage situation have been swirling among those on the streets, where specialized negotiating officers are said to have been called in.
Members of the public have been removed from the street after gas was reportedly intentionally released from a damaged pipeline.
A witness said she had seen five armed officers and noticed several trucks from the Territorial Support Group that were parked on the perimeter.
Police officers, who appeared to be preparing to enter the building, have been seen wearing breathing apparatus.

Several police cars are parked outside the building, while at least a dozen firefighters have gathered alongside a fire truck.
A witness told the Mirror that the police had been on the street for several hours.
The Mirror has contacted the Metropolitan Police regarding the incident.
Just before 8 p.m., the Force tweeted that there was an incident on Great Dover Street, which is next to Tabard Street.
“On Saturday, January 2 at 2:12 p.m., the police answered a call to a riot on Great Dover Street, SE1,” the tweet read.
“Due to the threats made to the officers, a multi-agency response was coordinated.
“At this time there is no known threat to the public.
“Local authorities and ward officials are present to help.”
Police officers have told people living on the street to stay indoors.
More to follow.
