The full scale of the Covid pandemic is unknown, the data suggests, with one in four tests positive in some parts of London.

About 95.9 percent of top-level English local authorities had positivity rates above five percent in the week to December 25 (143 out of 149).

In London, positivity rates reached 18 percent on Christmas Day and 11.4 percent across England.

Nationally, it’s the highest rate since late April, when the testing regime was still below 100,000 per day. As of mid-December, more than 400,000 tests had been performed per day, on average.

Professor Hunter said it was an indication that the virus was “out of control” in many areas of the country, particularly where the new variant is prominent.

“As an indication that we have something that is not under control [the positivity rate] it’s as good as any other, “he said.

“In London, in the last few days, the rate has risen considerably, and if it continues to rise under a fairly severe lockdown, it is terrible.

“I think we are nowhere near how bad it could get, especially since we saw this variant rise rapidly under the national shutdown in November.”

According to the National Statistics Office’s Covid Infection Survey, until December 23, the positivity rates for cases compatible with the new variant continued to increase dramatically since the beginning of December.

In London, South East and East England, the new strain of the virus has continued to rise considerably and the rates of cases consistent with the new strain are now increasing in all other regions.
