A football fan who was once dubbed Britain’s fattest man weighing 65 kilos has died.
Touching tributes have been paid to Barry Austin, who died yesterday at age 52.
Barry gained notoriety for his overeating and was once featured in a Sky One documentary ‘Inside Britain’s Fattest Man’ hosted by Richard Hammond.
He was also featured in the ITV comedy-drama “The Fattest Man in Britain,” starring Timothy Spall and Bobby Ball.
Barry, who used to drink up to 40 pints of beer and bottles of liquor on a night out and known as’ Fat Baz ‘, also had his own column in a boys’ magazine and was often seen on the BBC news commenting on current issues.
At one point, he consumed up to 29,000 calories and drank up to 12 liters of soda in one day.
In recent years, Barry, of Chelmsley Wood, Birmingham, was said to have respiratory problems and infections.
The heartbroken daughter of his partner, Dannie Nina Louise, paid tribute to him on Facebook.
She said, “Absolutely heartbroken is the only word I can say about how I feel right now, resting in paradise for the great man in my life, my dad Barry Grizzly Austin.”
“I loved you the way you were and it’s how we treated each other, you were the kind of dad who was always there no matter what … we had our ups and downs, but I can honestly say that I never loved you differently in any way. It’s hard to deal with you not being around anymore … seeing my mom the way it’s horrible, the whole family falls apart … (sic) “.
The former taxi driver is said to have lost 20 stones in April 2012 while preparing to marry his then financier Debbie Kirby, 50, of Solihull, West Midlands.
After having a gastric balloon put in, the blues supporter believed his weight had dropped to 40 kilos in 2012 and lost his title as the fattest man in Britain.
But even with the drastic weight loss, Barry was reported to be suffering from severe leg problems and growth weighing two to three kilos in his own right.
Tributes have been paid to Barry on social media.
Birmingham City FC posted: “We are saddened to hear about the passing of Barry Austin, a longtime Bluenose.
“His love for the Blues was unquestionable. Rest in peace, Baz.”
Barry was surpassed as the fattest man in Britain by Paul Mason, who weighed more than 70 kilos.
But Britain’s fattest man is now a takeaway app addict Jason Holton, 30, of Camberley, Surrey.
Jason, who weighs 50 stones, had to be carried out of his third-floor apartment by the fire service in October 2020 after being trapped inside for five years.
