Police prevented drivers from Level 4 areas from entering Merseyside on a main route into the city.
Liverpool and surrounding areas plunged into Level 3 on New Year’s Eve, meaning police must clamp down on those who break the latest coronavirus restrictions.
Knowsley police said they had officers patrolling commercial areas to target those who had traveled here to shop.
While pulling the cars on the main roads that cut through the region, officials say they dealt with several drivers who broke the rules.
Meanwhile, the Merseyside Police Highway Surveillance Unit tweeted that they were conducting ‘covid and other crime compliance’ checks in the Liverpool 7 area, including a checkpoint on Edge Lane.
On Facebook, a Merseyside police spokesman posted a series of photos of officers talking to drivers and checking which areas they came from.
They added: “Today, officers are conducting high-visibility patrol and highway operations around commercial areas in Merseyside, enforcing violations of Covid regulation, including those entering the area from Level 4.”

Police were praised on social media for making sure people were following the rules as Liverpool desperately tried to reduce its infection rate.
Beneath the message, Paula Greenway said: “Anything the police do to prevent people from breaking the law is their job.
