Scots were warned to avoid parties and gatherings during the New Years period as the cases jumped to Hogmanay.

Scotland’s ability to administer the new vaccine to people over 50 before spring will depend on supplies, according to the Health Secretary.

Jeane Freeman also confirmed that Scotland will receive 44,000 doses of the Covid-19 vaccine from the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca next week, with the four nations continuing to plan supply and delivery.

After the approval of the second vaccine on Wednesday, the Scottish government announced that it would be administered to people north of the border from Monday along with the rest of the nations of the United Kingdom.

On Boxing Day, mainland Scotland was plunged into Level 4 lockdown restrictions in the wake of fears about a mutant strain of coronavirus.

Orkney, Shetland and Western Isles are exempt, but they have moved to level three in the alert level system.

The measures are scheduled to be in place for three weeks, but the Scottish government says it will review the restrictions after two.
