Jurgen Klopp makes ‘strange’ admission to Premier League table and sends message to Liverpool fans

Jurgen Klopp has urged fans not to “worry too much” about Liverpool’s form, while regretting that fans were again left out of Anfield.

The Premier League champions will once again play home games behind closed doors after the Liverpool city region was placed in Tier 3 of the government’s coronavirus restrictions as the second wave of the pandemic begins to sweep across the whole country.

As it stands, it means fans will not be allowed to attend Anfield’s blockbuster clash with bitter North West rivals Manchester United in just over a fortnight, with Liverpool atop the table in 2021 despite a frustrating goalless draw at Newcastle United on Wednesday.

And when asked if it was incredibly sad that fans were being excluded from matches again, Klopp said: “Yes, it is.

“It’s not that we play football (just for) ourselves. We play for our families and our friends, but mostly for our fans.

“I hope they liked the game (in Newcastle) and I hope they don’t worry too much.

“We want to be the distraction from all the worries we have.

“We all have concerns, obviously. But we take the time to focus on the games on that (the game) and we hope our people can do that.”

Klopp added: “The world is still in a really difficult place. We all expected it to be different at the end of the year, but we knew a little that in the winter people can’t go out and there will be a second wave.

“Then Christmas came and we knew it was a challenge for us as a society to deal with it properly, so it was clear that the numbers would go up.

“The vaccines are there and the next one is coming. We are, I think, on the good side (of the pandemic), but now we have to stay the course and maintain discipline.

“We try everything in and around the football club to be as safe as possible and to continue playing.”

Liverpool have stuttered through the festive period and also lost points on Sunday in a disappointing 1-1 draw at home to West Bromwich Albion.

And Klopp, speaking to liverpoolfc.com, believes the season will continue to test evidence.

“You cannot imagine that the position in the table that we are now is bad,” he said. “If we were 15th or something like that, people would say, ‘Oh my God, something has really gone wrong.

“Being first at this point is positive. From this position, (some people say) you generally become champions and that feels like pressure. No, it is not pressure. We don’t think about that right now.

“Yes, we are the best, that’s good, it’s better than any other position in the league. We know it’s tough and tough, it’s tough for everyone. It was a strange season so far and it will continue to be a strange season.

“We fight, we try everything to squeeze the results of the games. Sometimes it looks good and other times less.”
