Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta appears to have turned a corner after back-to-back victories over Chelsea and Brighton, but tensions continue to simmer below the surface, with one star challenging the Spaniard at a recent team meeting.

Arteta made a statement by leaving Mesut Ozil out of his Premier League and Europa League plans at the start of this season and the 38-year-old expects “ many players ” to leave this January as he looks to alter some feathers and chop down the dead wood for your squad.

However, many disgruntled and frustrated team members, including Ozil, who remains the club’s top earner with dazzling salaries of £ 350,000 a week, will remain in North London until the end of the season, inevitably caused friction.

According to The Daily Mirror, a ‘disgruntled’ senior player even challenged Arteta in front of his stunned teammates. It is claimed that the anonymous individual questioned why other first team stars have been treated differently this period.

On Thursday, Sead Kolasinac completed a six-month loan to former club Schalke and several others are expected to follow the Bosnian until the Emirates’ departure this winter.

Central defenders Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Calum Chambers are among those considered in excess of requirements and both hope to secure moves before the January transfer window closes.

Arsenal will be desperate for 2021 to get off to a positive start when they take the field against 19th-ranked West Brom this weekend.

The Gunners can get three wins out of three for the first time in the Premier League this season, but Arteta expects a ‘tough test’ at the Hawthorns.

When asked what he had done with the Baggies under new coach Sam Allardyce, Arteta said: ‘Well, two very different games.

‘The first against Liverpool, when they had a very clear plan and executed it very well.

“ I think that even with 1-0 they didn’t change anything at all. They knew they were going to have their moments. They grew up and got into the game, and they were much more efficient in the second half and got Liverpool in trouble.

Sam is very efficient at what he does. He has a very clear philosophy of the game, he always got results, he always made it very difficult for you and it will not be different.

“Their teams are always organized and they know exactly what to do, it will be a difficult test again.”
