Jurgen Klopp urged to make Jordan Henderson’s decision after Liverpool draw at Newcastle

Former Liverpool star Danny Murphy asked Jurgen Klopp to knock out Nathaniel Phillips and put Jordan Henderson in central defense.

Klopp’s defense has been affected by injuries, with Joel Matip, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez on the treatment table.

That led to Reds manager Klopp selecting Phillips for his third Premier League start to the season for a goalless draw at Newcastle on Wednesday.

Although the tie ensured the Premier League champions stayed on top, Phillips was unstable at times.

And Murphy was less than impressed with the youngster’s display, suggesting Liverpool should move captain Henderson from central midfield to the heart of their defense.

“I think he [Phillips] I struggled a bit at times. He got the warning in the second half when he was out of position a couple of times, ”Murphy told the Stadium Astro.

“I would play Henderson there in a great game, alongside Fabinho at the moment. I know he likes to trust the young guys and give them a chance, but with the other midfield options, he would play Henderson there.

“He’s fast, experienced, no one is going to run him, he can jump, that’s what I would do personally.”

Murphy singled out Callum Wilson as Phillips’ main source of trouble, and the Magpies forward appeared to have the upper hand in his battle with the young Liverpool defender.

“He looked a bit nervous tonight, I think in the next games we will probably see a change there. I’d be surprised if he keeps his place, to be honest, “he said.

“I know it gives that air presence, but depending on who you play against, I don’t think you can only be on the team for that, you need a little more.

“I think sometimes I was a little in awe of Wilson, a little scared of him, you could feel it. I felt uncomfortable when I was around Wilson. They still kept a clean sheet, to be fair to them. “
