The Health Department has reported 11 other coronavirus-related deaths.

New figures released Thursday afternoon show the death toll in Northern Ireland at 1,322.

On the board of the Department, 1,929 new cases of the virus were registered in the last 24 hours.

The number of people who have tested positive for the virus since the start of the pandemic is now 72,834.

And 34 coronavirus patients are currently in the ICU.

Meanwhile, on Thursday morning, the Minister of Education announced changes to the opening dates of local schools.

Peter Weir said the proposed path forward has been “informed by the evidence and advice provided.”

The changes are:

  • Primary students will receive distance training until January 11, after which they will go to school for face-to-face teaching.
  • Post-primary students will also receive distance training during the first week of January.
  • From Monday, January 11, students from years 8 to 11 will continue to receive distance classes until the end of January, while students from years 12 to 14 will attend the school for face-to-face teaching;
  • Child care settings, including those attached to schools, preschool facilities, nurseries, and special schools, should be open as usual;
  • Exams scheduled for January will be facilitated in accordance with public health guidelines, and schools will have the flexibility to teach students face-to-face because they must sit for those exams if they so choose;
  • The schools will host vulnerable children and the children of key workers from the beginning of the term.
