There’s one last blast of cold in store before the UK says goodbye to 2020.
There will be cold and icy winter rains in many parts of the country, with temperatures dropping to -5C (23F) in the glens of Scotland on New Years Eve.
Snow and ice weather warnings remain in effect for much of northern England and much of Scotland until 2pm Thursday.
A snow and ice warning for the north of Scotland and Northern Ireland is in effect until 11am, as is an ice warning for the far south of England.
Met Office forecaster Clare Nasir said New Year’s Eve would be a “very cold night as temperatures plummet.”
He said the last day of the year would have a “very cold start” along with the risk of rain, sleet and snow sliding across the country from northern Scotland.
Snow is more likely inland and on hills.
She added: “Many of us will see brighter weather, with a strong breeze that will keep things very cold, and again the risk of ice as we approach New Years Day, with again a wintry mix coming and going. , and a rather cold climate. Generalized frosts “.
Temperatures are expected to be between 2 ° C and 6 ° C (35.6 ° F and 42.8 ° F) during the day, following Wednesday’s low of -10.2 ° C (13.6 ° F) at Dalwhinnie in the Scottish Highlands, the coldest winter night yet.
The roads are relatively quiet due to stay-at-home orders for much of the UK but drivers should be aware of possible icy conditions.
