The French authorities arrested a person inside the Channel Tunnel.

It is not known if they got very deep into the tunnel they had managed to get to before being discovered.

Officials in France are now handling the matter.

A Eurotunnel spokesperson said: “Eurotunnel can confirm that a person was detected inside the Channel Tunnel and detained by the French authorities.”

“As there is now a criminal procedure, we cannot comment further at this time.”

The Daily Mirror quoted French sources as saying that a man had been trying to walk along the tunnel into France.

They had seen him disappear into the Folkestone Tunnel in Kent, according to the report.

Police on both sides of the tunnel were alerted and French officials eventually found it.

The man was arrested on December 21, according to the Mirror report, and appeared in a French court last Wednesday.

He was placed in preventive detention and will appear again in court in February.

The tunnel carries Eurostar passenger trains and Eurotunnel Shuttle for vehicles.

Trains travel at speeds of up to 100 mph in the tunnel.
