The Premier League has returned its highest number of positive coronavirus results in a single round of testing this season, with 18 new cases recorded. The League confirmed that between December 21 and 27, 1,479 players and club staff were tested and the 18 people who have the virus will now self-isolate for a period of 10 days.
Several of those cases are in Manchester City and the outbreak there led to his game with Everton being canceled four hours early on Monday.
The previous highest number of cases in a round this season was 16, during the week of November 9-15.
A statement from the Premier League read: “The Premier League can confirm today that between Monday, December 21 and Sunday, December 27, 1,479 players and club personnel were tested for Covid-19. Of these, there were 18 new positive tests.
“Players or club staff who have tested positive will be isolated for a period of 10 days. The Premier League provides this aggregated information in order to ensure the integrity and transparency of the competition. The League will not provide specific details on clubs or individuals and the results will be made public after each round of testing. “
