Arsenal defender Gabriel tested positive for coronavirus, ruling out the Brazilian in the Gunners’ upcoming games against Brighton and West Brom.

On Boxing Day it was announced that Gabriel would have to isolate himself after he was marked as a close contact of someone who had tested positive for the virus.

He missed the 3-1 win over Chelsea as a result and news of his positive test means he will be absent for trips to Brighton and West Brom on Tuesday and Saturday respectively.

A statement on the Arsenal website read: “Gabriel has tested positive for Covid-19 and is isolating himself according to UK Government and Premier League protocols.”

“We will continue to monitor and support Gabriel, and we hope that he will be available again after our next two games.”

Compatriots David Luiz and Willian were also ruled out of the game against Chelsea due to illness, but the club clarified that the couple had tested negative for Covid-19 and that they had to rejoin the full team on New Year’s Eve. Thomas Partey is also out with a thigh injury.

Everton v Manchester City withdraw after Covid outbreak at City

Manchester City’s Premier League match in Everton on Monday night was postponed four hours before kick-off due to a Covid-19 outbreak among the City team.

It is the second Premier League game this season to be canceled due to a coronavirus outbreak, following Aston Villa vs Newcastle earlier this month.

Several English Football League (EFL) games during the holiday period have also been postponed due to outbreaks, with another seven games hit Monday.

On Christmas Day, Manchester City announced that Gabriel Jesus and Kyle Walker had tested positive for coronavirus, along with two members of the club’s staff. The club has already closed its first team training ground, which will undergo a deep cleaning.
