The UK has recorded its largest daily increase in coronavirus cases since the pandemic began with 41,385 positive tests.

There were 357 more deaths within 28 days of a positive test, bringing the UK total to 71,109

Is compared to yesterday’s increases of 30,501 confirmed coronavirus cases and 316 related deaths.

Dr Yvonne Doyle, Medical Director of Public Health England (PHE), said: “This very high level of infection is a growing concern at a time when our hospitals are most vulnerable, with new admissions on the rise in many regions.

“Despite unprecedented infection levels, there is hope on the horizon. We can combat this virus by working together as the vaccine continues to reach the most vulnerable first, and then many more in the weeks and months to come.”

Actual figures are likely to be higher, as Scotland will not release death data between December 25-28, while Northern Ireland does not provide figures on cases or deaths during this period.

Another 318 people who tested positive for coronavirus died at a hospital in England, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths reported in hospitals to 48,860, NHS England said on Monday.

The patients were between 38 and 100 years old. All but 13, ages 64 to 92, had known underlying health conditions.

The deaths occurred between December 13 and 27.

Another 12 deaths were reported without a positive COVID-19 test result.

Figures released by the UK government often do not correlate with totals from country-specific health agencies, due to differences in the timing and methods by which cases and deaths are recorded.
