Cases have risen 57 percent in the last week, meaning millions more people could be under Level 4 restrictions after the next review, The Sunday Times reports.
It comes as leading scientists warn that all of England “must be brought to Level 4 immediately” to stop the spread of the mutant strain of coronavirus affecting the country.
The UK’s new strain, which scientists say is 70% easier to spread, is already “out of control”.
Another variant of Covid-19 from South Africa has also reached the UK.
Hospital admissions for coronavirus are set to exceed the peak of the first wave in April.
The most recent data from the Health Department shows there were 21,286 patients in the hospital for the killer virus on December 22.
This is not far from the peak of the first wave, when there were 21,683 patients in the hospital on April 21.
The most current seven-day average hospital admissions is 1984 and if that current trend continues, it will pass the peak of patients who were in hospital beds in the spring.
Hospital admissions are currently at a higher figure than the week before the second shutdown, where there was a seven-day average of 1,191.
The number of patients admitted to the hospital on December 20 is 2,143, according to the latest figures.
In April, there was a single day of admission for 3,569 patients.
The Health Department website notes that not all data will be updated every day during the Christmas period, raising fears that the actual figures will be much higher when released.
IN LEVELS
The Independent Sage, which provides independent advice to the UK government, has said that thousands more will be infected in the new year.
One of the group’s members, Dr. Zubaida Haque, wondered today why the government has not placed the entire country on the strictest level of life-saving restrictions.
She tweeted yesterday: “Given that we surpassed 70,000 # COVID19 deaths in the UK on Christmas Day, and there are now more coronavirus patients in the hospital than at any time during the pandemic, why hasn’t the government put restrictions in place # tier4 in all parts of the country? UK? @IndependentSage is very concerned.
“Given the crisis situation in which we find the highest number of daily deaths with # COVID19 in the second wave, with thousands of chances of being infected due to the relaxation of the rules at level 1-3 on Christmas day AND the government’s failed test and trace system, we need # tier4 everywhere now to save lives. “
Meanwhile, millions more people woke up to more severe coronavirus restrictions as new level changes went into effect on Boxing Day.
‘SITUATION OF CRISIS’
The number of people in the strict restrictions increased from six million to 24 million people, 43 percent of the population, in an attempt to stop the spread of the mutant Covid.
It comes after the government said 570 more died within 28 days of testing positive for the virus on Christmas Day, while there were another 32,725 laboratory-confirmed coronavirus cases in the UK.
And other scientists have warned that the new strain found in Kent could affect children more.
Researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine said there is “some evidence that the increase may be particularly marked in children.”
They found that the new strain of the virus is 56 percent more infectious, and that even with another national lockdown, it would be difficult to reduce the R rate.
Their study also found that infections were “unlikely” to decrease unless schools and colleges closed.
The variant of the virus will lead to a wave of coronavirus cases and deaths that will peak in the spring of 2021 in London, the south-east and the east of England, according to scientists.
And they said cases and deaths will peak in the summer of 2021 for the rest of the country.
However, the researchers do not believe that the new strain is more deadly or more serious in adults or children.
