The Coral Welsh Grand National gathering in Chepstow on Sunday has been canceled due to waterlogged ground with the event rescheduled for January 9.
Chepstow was hit by 100mm of rain earlier in the week and another 27mm of rain overnight has left areas of false terrain on the track that cannot be passed.
It’s a huge blow to the arena owned by the Arena Racing Company, as their masterpiece is a highlight of the racing festive period.

Field Director Libby O’Flaherty said: “It is a shame to have to cancel today’s meeting as we have worked so hard to get the game started.
“We only have one problem area on the back straight, where the old waterfall used to be, but it’s on the chase track and obstacles and there’s no getting around it.
“The rest of the track has withstood the 127mm of rain that we had last week very well, so it is very frustrating for everyone involved.
“We will reschedule the meeting for January 9 and hope that the weather will be better for us by then.”
Limerick suffered the same fate on Sunday morning, with the track flooded after 18mm of rain overnight. Monday’s game on the track is subject to an inspection at 8 am on race day.
There was better news in Wetherby when the field passed a morning inspection. The race is intense after 18mm of rain overnight and the last three hurdles on the back straight will be avoided.
The Kempton ride has smoothed out to smooth, good to smooth in spots (good to smooth) for the second and final day of the course’s Christmas reunion after 8mm of overnight rain.
Dual Champion Chase winner Altior (2.30) makes his long-awaited comeback in the Ladbrokes Desert Orchid Chase, while his stablemate Shishkin (1.20) has a high chance of landing the heavily sponsored Wayward Lad Novices’ Chase. Similary.
It’s day two of the Leopardstown Christmas festival and after 16mm of overnight rain the chase field is giving way, yielding to soft in places (from yielding, well to yielding in some places) and the hurdles field it’s soft, giving in places giving way to soft in places).
Following the cancellation of Chepstow, ITV4 has revised its schedule and now televises three races from Leopardstown (1.10 / 1.45 / 2.55) and Wetherby’s William Hill Castleford Chase (2.10) along with three Kempton contests (1.20 / 2.30 / 3.05).
