The Moroccan international had targeted the clash with the struggling team of Mikel Arteta after limping from the win at Leeds with a hamstring strain earlier in the month.
Callum Hudson-Odoi, who also suffered a similar injury, has already returned to the team for Monday’s game against West Ham.
But Ziyech will be in the treatment room longer after missing the start of the season with a knee problem.
Frank Lampard said: “You have to wait to recover. It is not a long-term concern and we hope to have it back in the next week. And hopefully he can deliver what he did before because he was offering great things.
“We missed that in a way, but that’s football and that’s what happens when players play at a high level every two or three days.”
Reece James and Ben Chilwell are also struggling to take part in any of the games after Christmas: today against Arsenal or the clash with Aston Villa 48 hours later.
James rested against West Ham with an ongoing knee problem, while Chilwell injured his ankle in that game.
Lampard said: “You both have doubts, so I cannot give you an answer at this time. We are not sure if they will be suitable for either game. ”
Chelsea expected lineup (4-3-3): Mendy; Azpilicueta, Zouma, Thiago Silva, Emerson; Havertz, Kante, Monte; Werner, Abraham, Pulisic.
