Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is unsure about starting Arsenal’s Premier League clash with Chelsea as the club captain recovers from a calf problem.
Mikel Arteta will face a late decision on the availability of the skipper, who could start the game off the bench as the Gunners look for a result that can start their season.
Gabriel Martinelli is also a doubt after the returning Brazilian injured his shin during the Carabao Cup loss to Manchester City in midweek.
He could also be on the bench, while Granit Xhaka appears poised to return to the starting eleven after his three-game suspension.
Thomas Partey is still out, while Bernd Leno, Bukayo Saka and Kieran Tierney will surely return after missing the City game.
Willian will face his former club, although former Arsenal star Paul Merson would like the Brazilian to fall from the side after his recent poor form.
“He’s the only one you can ask and again it has to be a question of trust. I’m not sure he plays. He has had enough opportunities to play, more than the other younger players,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“Arsenal’s big name players haven’t played for the last six weeks and this is the problem Arteta has had.
“[Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang scored the other day, but didn’t really seem to score. His body language hasn’t been great, Nicolas Pepe doesn’t even start all the time and Willian seems to be carrying him. “
The Gunners will begin the game in 15th place at the table, with a victory raising them one spot.
Arsenal XI planned: Leno, Holding, Gabriel, Tierney, Maitland-Niles, Elneny, Xhaka, Saka, Willian, Lacazette, Pepe.
