Ole Gunnar Solskjær is teaching his Manchester United players how to deal with a new phenomenon: receiving applause.
“Right now we are getting accolades and now that’s something else we have to learn to deal with,” Solskjær said ahead of Saturday’s lunchtime trip to Leicester.
The United manager and his squad have endured so much criticism in recent months that it almost seems strange to consider them as title contenders, but they are third, five points behind leaders Liverpool, with one game in hand and one point behind Leicester, who has also played an extra game.
“We are getting better and better,” Solskjær said. “I go into every game thinking that I can win. These guys know what I want from my team. There is always noise around Manchester United, but for us now it’s about improving every game and taking one game at a time … Every game is a cup final now.
The need to maintain this incremental progress dictates that Solskjær does not mention the possibility of overshadowing Liverpool and company of their players. “It’s not something we talk about,” he said. “The only thing we focus on is improving day by day and learning to deal with different situations.”
Leicester is a good example and Solskjær does not underestimate the threat posed by Brendan Rodgers’ team. “We have had some very good games against Leicester, tight games; They are a very good team, with a very good coach, ”he said. “I enjoyed watching them with Brendan. They have some threats you need to watch out for. “
The United coach acknowledges that a clean sheet could use him. “It will catch up with you if you keep giving teams the advantage,” he said. “Leicester are one of those teams that you definitely don’t want to give a one or two goal advantage to.
“They have so many players who play in the transition that [if you fall behind] You can easily end up conceding three or four goals. We have to start well; the first goal is going to be very important ”.
