Arsenal legend Ian Wright says that only a couple of the club’s players are aware of the dire situation the Gunners are in as they continue to languish near the foot of the table.
Mikel Arteta’s team will spend Christmas in 15th place after a disappointing streak that also included a 4-1 loss to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.
The Gunners face key encounters during the holiday period as they entertain Chelsea in a London derby on Boxing Day, before back-to-back trips to two of the few clubs below them in the table, Brighton and West Brom.
With Arsenal generally at the other end of the table and challenging European venues, Wright is looking for characters who have the experience of fighting their way out of tough positions.
“What Arsenal fans have to recognize right now is where we are,” he said on Optus Sport’s The Kelly and Wrighty Show.
“It’s the understanding of where we also have to look at the players in the locker room. Do you realize what’s going on?
“I saw Burnley beat the Wolves the other day and it was a performance by a team that knows where they are.
“And this is what I say with Arsenal, there are not many players … I think [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang in Jurgen Klopp’s last season at Borussia Dortmund could have been flirting with that, but in the end they pulled it off, no problem.
“I think Cedric Soares at Southampton had a moment where they were struggling, but there are not many in that locker room who know the situation they are facing now.”
Aubameyang was part of Klopp’s Dortmund, who sat last in the Bundesliga for more than half of the 2014/15 season before bouncing back to finish seventh, and the manager left that summer and joined Liverpool a few months later.
Right-back Cedric, meanwhile, was part of the Southampton teams that finished 17th in the Premier League in 2017/18 and 16th in 2018/19.
