A couple trapped in their car submerged for two hours has been rescued in what eyewitnesses called “a Christmas miracle.”
Matt and Alex Emmerson assumed the car was empty when they saw it from their bathroom window, but after 15 minutes emergency crews arrived and a daring rescue began.
Edmonson, 44, told the BBC: “Whoever this poor couple was, they were there for a long time, about two hours.”
“The water must be ice cold.”
Ms Emmerson, 42, added: “I just assumed there would be no one there.
“Because usually people jump to safety before they get to that point.
“We thought it was another abandoned car.”
Her husband, who called the rescue a “Christmas miracle,” said a firefighter went straight into the water and broke a car window to gain access “even though the water was up to his chin.”
Ms Emmerson, while filming the rescue, said: “He’s literally up to his armpits.”
The firefighter can be heard yelling at his colleagues, “Guys, I’m not sure, I don’t know if anyone is here.”
Moments later, he sees a woman and breaks the window before pulling her out.
He seemed to be in shock.
Emmerson said, “I couldn’t see anyone come out of it alive.
“I was yelling at her to find out if there was anyone else there and she was really in shock.”
Then they found a man inside and took him out.
The couple were taken to hospital for evaluation according to the East of England Ambulance Service, but no further details were given.
The Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service said it had received more than 300 calls about flooding since Wednesday afternoon.
The Emmersons said the Thorpe End area in Norfolk where they live is often flooded with heavy rain.
