People across the UK left their homes for a Christmas Eve bell session after a woman’s campaign went viral.
The initiative was launched on Facebook by Mary Beggs-Reid of Harrogate in North Yorkshire and has since received endorsement from Captain Sir Tom Moore and Boris Johnson.
The two-minute event saw many families heading to the door to ring the bells in solidarity with those who spend Christmas alone.

Posting on Facebook before the event, Ms Beggs-Reid wrote: ‘We can’t be physically together, but we can call together! An opportunity for us to feel connected and have a happy memory of 2020 ‘.
Among those who participated was Dorset County Hospital staff, who tweeted: ‘We end 2020 with a little magic, hope and togetherness!’
Many people took advantage of the event to thank the frontline workers as well.

Ms Beggs-Reid, a 41-year-old real estate agent, told the Palestinian Authority news agency: “I think it is fantastic that the Prime Minister supports an everyday mother like me and tries to help communities as much as we can “.
She added: “Especially with the recent news, this is more necessary now than ever.”
