Scotland’s police will take “no further action” after Nicola Sturgeon broke Covid rules by removing her mask at a wake.

A spokesman for the force said the Prime Minister had apologized for an “inadvertent violation”.

A photograph published in the Scottish Sun showed Sturgeon chatting with three women in an Edinburgh bar while standing at a distance but not wearing a mask.

Under the Scottish government’s coronavirus rules, customers in hospitality venues must wear a face cover, except when seated, and must wear one when moving.

She had been attending the funeral of a Scottish government official.

Addressing the MSPs today, Sturgeon apologized for the infraction and admitted that he was wrong.

She told the MSPs: “I want to take this opportunity to say how sorry I am for this violation of the rules that I ask all of us to follow every day.

“I took off my mask while briefly attending a funeral last week. I’m sure everyone has seen a photo of me without her in the media this morning.

“I was wrong. There are no excuses. These rules apply to me, just like everyone else. The rules really matter.”

The newspaper reported that she was at the Stable Bar and Restaurant after attending a funeral at the nearby Mortonhall Crematorium.

A Scottish police spokesman said: “We are aware of a photograph of the Prime Minister that appeared in The Sun on 23 December, in which she was not wearing a face mask at a wake. The Prime Minister has acknowledged this inadvertent infringement , for which he has apologized.

“We remind everyone of the requirement to wear face covers in closed public places for public health reasons. The Scottish Police will not take any further action in relation to this matter.”

A Scottish Conservative spokesman said: “The Prime Minister should know better.

By forgetting the rules and not setting an appropriate example, you are undermining essential public health messages.

“It is a mistake that an ordinary member of the public would not get away with it. There can’t be one rule for Nicola Sturgeon and another for everyone else. “

Coronavirus regulations introduced on September 14 state that face covers for customers and staff are mandatory when entering, exiting and moving around hospitality venues.

The rules state: “There is an exemption for when customers sit for food and drink service and for roles in the back of the house, such as kitchen staff or staff behind protective screens that separate them. customers “.

Those who violate the facial coverage rules can face a £ 60 fine.
