A driver in his 20s was killed in an accident between a car and a truck on one of Devon’s main roads, shortly after midnight today.
Police are asking for witnesses after the collision on the A3052 Sidmouth Road in Clyst St Mary near Exeter.
The driver of a blue Audi car, a man in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene with a large truck.
The highway was closed for almost nine hours while police continued their investigations, but has now reopened.
A spokesman for the Devon and Cornwall force said: “Police attended the scene along with crews from South West Ambulance and Devon Air Ambulance. Sadly, the driver of the car, a man in his 20s from Tiverton, was pronounced dead in the place”.
Officers from the Highway Police Unit and forensic collision investigators also attended.
The spokesperson said: “The police would like to thank the public for their patience during the shutdown while the scene was investigated.”
But several drivers have reportedly ignored road closure signs, which could endanger the lives of police officers and hamper investigative work.
Traffic monitoring website Inrix said this morning: “Police report that several drivers ignore the signs despite the road being closed.”
The accident was the first in a series of accidents in Devon this morning.
Devon County Council has urged drivers to stay off the roads due to heavy rain during a yellow weather warning that lasts until 6 a.m. tomorrow.
