A “showdown” is taking place between truck drivers and police officers in Dover after the border with France was finally reopened this morning.

A group of men, believed to be heavy vehicle drivers, were seen this morning pushing, booing and booing officers following reports of delays in reopening the border.

Thousands of drivers, many of them from all over Europe, have been trapped for days in the south of England and many will miss Christmas with their families.

Tension mounts after the Calais / Dover crossing was closed Sunday night for fears of a highly infectious new Covid strain.

France finally relented last night and allowed the border to reopen for people who tested negative for the coronavirus.

Police confront truck drivers in Dover

A German van driver, who has been stuck in the UK since the weekend, told the Today show: “I’m here for the delivery. I’d like to come home for Christmas.

“Right now it is a catastrophic situation. I cannot go home, I must come here (Manston) to do a Covid test.

“I don’t know what to do. I want to go back to my family for Christmas, they are waiting for me. Every family is waiting for its man.”

The Army is conducting rapid tests on truckers to resume transporting goods across the border.

Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick said it will take a few days to clear the delay.

Drivers are still urged not to travel to Kent until further notice as a massive testing program is underway.
