London Level 4: Plans for full national lockdown from Boxing Day as Covid strain sweeps the capital

It appears that the whole of England will enter a third lockdown since Boxing Day as the mutant strain Covid continues to cause an increase in the number of cases.

The Government held a meeting today (Tuesday, December 22) to consider a national shutdown as of December 26, the Mirror exclusively reports.

This Golden Command meeting also discussed putting Birmingham to Level 4 before Christmas as cases spike in the city.

A source at the meeting said: “The situation is developing rapidly, so we must respond at the same pace.

“Other parts of England are more likely to be included in Level 4 as of Boxing Day.”

The mutant strain of Covid is spreading

At Gold Command meetings, top health officials, politicians, and local leaders meet to consider how to deal with the virus in certain areas.

Apparently, the move to put Birmingham on Level 4 will be delayed for now, but an announcement about a third closure, which would take effect immediately after Christmas, could be made tomorrow (Wednesday, December 23).

The lockdown could come as early as Boxing Day, although many in the government are reportedly pushing for it to happen a few days later to avoid travel chaos.

Originally, a tier review had been planned for December 30, but fears that the mutant strain of Covid has spread means it could move forward.

Chief scientist Sir Patrick Vallance said yesterday that the mutant strain was “everywhere.”

The City Council has released the most up-to-date figures showing from December 9-15, 41,936 people tested positive in London at a rate of 468 cases per 100,000 residents.

Weekly statistics are compared to 20,212 cases and a rate of 226 per 100,000 people during the previous week (Dec. 2-8), so it more than doubled.

London was placed on the new Level 4 over the weekend along with parts of the South East such as Kent, Essex and Surrey.
