Burnley 2-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers
- Goals: Ashley Barnes (£ 6 million), Chris Wood (£ 6.2 million) | Fabio Silva (£ 5.2 million)
- Attend: Charlie Taylor (£ 4.5 million)
- Cousin: Wood x3, Barnes x2, Silva x1
Burnley extended their undefeated streak to four on Monday night when they defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers at Turf Moor.
The Clarets’ defense once again drew attention from a fantasy perspective, albeit without keeping a clean sheet this time as Fabio SilvaThe consolation penalty (£ 5.2m) deprived them of a fifth shutout in the space of seven weeks into the game.
The previously shy on goal Ashley barnes (£ 6.0 million) and Chris Wood (£ 6.2 million) rallied on offense and did the damage with short-range finishes on either side of halftime.
ALL ABOUT ME
When they’re on a beat and can call on their center halves and first-choice goalie, there aren’t many teams that seem like a more stable defensive unit than Burnley.
The start of the season saw the Clarets having to resort to backup plugs Jimmy Dunne (£ 3.9 million) and Kevin Long (£ 4.4 million) as the injury crisis mounted and it came as no surprise that they shipped eight goals in the first three weeks of the match.
From back to fitness James tarkowski (£ 5.3 million) and Ben Mee (£ 4.9 million), things have improved.
In the six games that those two centrals and Nick pope (£ 5.4m) have played together this season, Burnley has kept four clean sheets and has only conceded two.
Yes, they are capable of being whipped by the best teams, but that was always the case, as evidenced by the series of 5-0 losses at the Etihad over the years.
But we’re not likely to want to put Burnley defenders on our Fantasy teams in those games anyway and the burning question for these budget assets is how likely they are to record shutouts in the most winnable matches.
The answer is ‘very’: Pope kept 13 clean sheets in 20 games against teams in the lower half last season. His record is equally impressive in 2020/21, with five clean sheets in seven games against clubs now ranking ninth or less.
If not for an awkward late foul on Silva by the rookie substitute Josh benson (£ 4.5 million), then Burnley would have been looking at another clean sheet and Pope would be sitting at the top of the FPL goalkeeping points chart.
Sean Dyche’s team completely ruled out the players they had handed over to Chelsea last week, with the only two saves Pope had to make coming from long-range efforts.
TAYLOR’S FAST RISE
With Mee and Tarkowski costing a little more, Charlie taylor (£ 4.5m) has become the benchmark economic path to Burnley’s bottom line.
The left back contributed his second assist of the season for Barnes ‘first game, reaching the baseline and producing a mocking cross for the forward to nod from inside the Wolves’ six-yard box.
Taylor is now the top points scorer among FPL defenders priced at £ 4.5 million or less.
Prospects for more clean sheets look positive in the next three Gameweeks, particularly the two games in Lancashire on either side of the New Year.
The question is what happens after that. Without a fix on Blank Gameweek 18, their double header on Double Gameweek 19 is unattractive and they won’t be at the top of many trainers’ shopping list for either of them.
SILVA LINING
Raul jimenezThe head injury (£ 8.2 million) raised the possibility that a forward with a £ 5.2 million rating would lead the Wolves line through Christmas and New Years, but Nuno Espirito Santo has, understandably, still been careful when putting too much weight on an 18 year old player. the shoulders of the old striker.
In just two of the four games Jiménez has missed, Fabio Silva led the line and was benched again on Monday, with Pedro Neto (£ 5.9 million) and Daniel Podence (£ 5.5 million) tasked with providing the goal threat from kick-off, with little joy.
We don’t even know where Silva is in the hierarchical order of penalty kicks when he takes the field like Jiménez and his substitute. Ruben neves (£ 5.2 million), were out of bounds when the teenage forward confidently scored Pope from 12 yards.
MAXIMUM OUT?
Max kilman (£ 4.2m) returned to the starting Wolves XI after a four-game absence, but it is still too early to say whether he will land a starting role again.
While the switch to a rear wing system opens up an additional spot in the middle half, Kilman may not have even started. Willy boly (£ 5.4m), who was an unused substitute on Monday, has not been an injury question before the game.
Similary, Owen Otasowie (£ 4.5 million), oddly playing in an advanced midfielder role, probably wouldn’t have appeared if Leander dendoncker (4.8 million pounds sterling).
It remains to be seen how quickly the Belgian will recover, but his absence in the middle of the park was deeply felt.
Athletic’s Wolves correspondent Tim Spiers made a similar point, also highlighting Boly’s tail on the form; It’s no wonder that clean sheets have dried out as their own performance levels have dropped.
Burnley XI (4-4-2): Father; Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor; Brady (Pieters 69), Brownhill, Westwood, McNeil (Benson 87); Wood, Barnes (Rodríguez 82).
Wolves XI (3-4-3): Patrick; Kilman, Coady, Saiss; Semedo, Neves (Vitinha 76), Moutinho, Ait-Nouri (Traore 60 ‘); Podence, Neto, Otasowie (Silva 60).
