Mr. Sahin said the company has “scientific confidence” that the vaccine will be effective, as the new way of COVID-19 shares 99% of proteins with previous iterations.

He added: “The probability that our vaccine will work … is relatively high.”

But he cautioned his statement by acknowledging that more research is needed on the mutation, which is common. in London and the south-east of England.

Sahin said that if adjustments were necessary, BioNTech would take around six weeks to make them, although regulatory approval may be needed.

He first became aware of the coronavirus in January and realized that the work he had done on cancer treatments could be applicable to research for a vaccine.

BioNTech assigned 500 employees to the project and subsequently gained endorsement from the US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and Chinese drug manufacturers Fosun.

Sahin has yet to receive the vaccine and says it is more important that his employees are vaccinated to make sure they can continue their work.
