Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was delighted with Manchester United’s performance against rivals Leeds and praised the record-breaking “physical monster” Scott McTominay for his display of man of the match.

The Norwegian celebrated two years in the Old Trafford hot seat in style on Sunday when the old foes met in a top-notch match for the first time since February 2004.

McTominay set the tone by becoming the first player in Premier League history to score twice in the first three minutes of a match, with Bruno Fernandes and Victor Lindelof also scoring in the first half.

Liam Cooper slashed one for Leeds just before the break, but Daniel James and a Fernandes penalty put the hosts further ahead before Stuart Dallas scored an impressive consolation as the game ended 6-2.

“Fantastic game from the boys,” United manager Solskjaer said. “We know they are going to challenge you, they will test you physically and tactically as well because it is a different game.

“It’s almost like going back to the old German teams with a sweeper and the rest marked by man.

“We had to find a way to create space, stop them, and of course when we started we did it, it helped.

“But they keep coming to the end and I think we show that we can match them physically.”

McTominay was the star man in Sunday’s victory and Solskjaer was full of praise for the academy graduate, who is a doubt for the Carabao Cup clash at Everton with a groin injury that he recovered towards the end of the match. .

“We knew they were intense, high-energy moments,” said the United manager. “But the movement of the forward guys and the cleanliness of some of the movements gave Scott that space in front of him with the ball at his feet.

“He is a physical monster. You do all your work every day meticulously, never shirking anything and getting rewarded for your fitness.

“His technical work is also improving, the space in front of him that he can race with.

“He can do everything. He used to be a forward and knows how to score goals. I think today he showed that he is also a handful inside and outside the area.

“I’m very satisfied with him and that energy and drive in an attack like this was important.”

This was the first time a club led by Marcelo Bielsa has conceded six goals in a match since February 1992, leaving the Leeds head coach understandably frustrated.

“The opportunities created in the first half were similar in the amount of opportunities, the difference in the first half was that they took advantage of their opportunities and we did not,” said Bielsa.

“The way both teams attacked was different. They took advantage of our missed passes when we were trying to create an attack and that’s how they created most of their chances.

“When we couldn’t finish our attacks, our return was not as fast as his transition.

“It is very difficult to accept, we are very sad and regret not being able to get more out of the game.”
