People should behave as if they already have COVID-19, especially in the new Level 4 areas of England, warned Health Secretary Matt Hancock.
He said the new strain of coronavirus was “out of control” and “we have to control it by reducing social contact.”
The five-day Christmas bubble period was shortened to Christmas Day only for England, Wales, and Scotland, and eliminated entirely for areas of England under the new Tier 4 rules, but remains in Northern Ireland.
Hancock told Sky’s Sophy Ridge on Sunday: “Everyone, particularly the people in Level 4 areas, should behave as if they might have the virus – that’s the only way we’re going to control it.”
He said the country faces a “huge challenge” in controlling the new strain of COVID-19 and that it is “more important now than ever” that people stick to the rules and reduce social contact “because this is very serious.”
“This is a deadly disease, we have to keep it under control and this new variant has made it more difficult.”
And he said the scenes of people queuing at train stations, rushing out of London before the new measures went into effect this morning, was “totally irresponsible behavior.”
