Eamonn Holmes was reportedly “gutted” when he and his wife Ruth Langsford lost their This Morning spot on Fridays.
The couple will no longer host Friday shows starting in January and aired their last slot show on Friday.
A friend of Eamonn’s reportedly told The Sun: “Eamonn understands that things change in broadcasts – he is now an expert on this.
“But the situation at This Morning has been tense for a while and the office politics surrounding its future has been bubbling under the surface.”
The source adds that Eamonn, 61, was “heartbroken” that he and Ruth, 60, lost their spot on Friday’s popular ITV show.
However, they added that the host “had no malice” and only “sadness” when he made recent comments on This Morning referencing the changes.
At his last show of the year on Friday, Eamonn told Ruth as he adjusted his glasses: “You know what I saw yesterday? Outside the opticians there was a man selling Christmas trees, discounting them at half price.”
Ruth replied, “I guess they are struggling to get rid of them.”
Eamonn then said, “I’d say yes, honey, that’s the obvious conclusion … that’s why they get rid of us now on a Friday.”
Starting in January, the pair will be replaced by This Morning colleagues Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary.
On Friday, Eamonn and Ruth said their goodbyes until they return as Christmas coverage in February for presenters Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby.
However, they had a message for fans to be nice to Alison and Dermot as the changes came in.
Eamonn said: “You won’t see us on Friday anymore, Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary will be here on Fridays from now on.
“Please can we ask you to be so nice to them? [Alison and Dermot] friends of ours as they are, and we are very close to Alison, as you have been with us for the last 15 years. “
The comments were met with an emotional response from fans of the show on social media.
This Morning will return for a Christmas show on December 25 this year on ITV, as daytime favorites make appearances on Yuletide.
Good Morning Britain and Lorraine will also air on Christmas Day this year.
The Mirror has reached out to a representative for Eamonn Holmes for comment.
