Paul Scholes believes Manchester United have put themselves back into the mix of titles this season after their win over Sheffield United and praised all four forwards, particularly Bruno Fernandes.
The Red Devils were left behind at Bramall Lane Thursday night after five minutes, but responded with a brilliant and slick counterfeit football display as Marcus Rashford grabbed a double and Anthony Martial also scored on the roster in a win by 3-2.
United are now just five points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool with one game down, and Scholes believes they are real contenders, although they will need some luck with injuries.
When asked if United can fight for the title, Scholes said Amazon Prime Video: ‘Yeah, you have to think that and sometimes tonight they were fantastic.
‘To be [Gunnar Solskjaer] This year I think it has changed formation many times, it has changed a lot of personnel.
‘We spoke before those five games last season where they didn’t change teams, it was practically this team tonight apart from the left-back and the goalkeeper, it was 4-2-3-1, it really suited them. .
“He was excited for this season, it hasn’t worked out as expected, but now I think he has finally found the right way to play.
‘That two in midfield is the only position I would think of changing from time to time, which [Nemanja] Matic one. Has Fred, has [Scott] McTominay, you can do that. I think Paul Pogba was fantastic tonight in that position and it’s a formation that really suits the team.
Fernandes in that 10th role feeding Martial, Rashford and [Mason] Greenwood, how exciting is that? Three of the best and fastest finishers in Europe when they get a chance.
‘I think the biggest problem is getting possession of the ball with both of them [midfielders], taking control of the game. Pogba and Matic need to control the game if Fernandes is going to be involved. Once the two take control of the game, United gets going and flies. And it also helps the middle halves.
“I think if they can keep nine or 10 players in shape for the next 26 games, which I know is a great question, I think they will be there or there.
‘We saw a slight drop in performance when two or three substitutes showed up, so he tells me there are probably 12 or 13 players who are good enough, keeping them in shape is going to be difficult.
But I think tonight they found a real way to play, an exciting way to play. Twenty-six games, they could be out there.
Scholes was particularly enthusiastic about Fernandes, adding: ‘Some of the passing and movement were sensational. The four front players were brilliant. Bruno sometimes … you give him time with the ball, he’s going to destroy teams. ‘
