Ondon faces a worsening Covid-19 crisis with almost 32,000 new cases registered in a week, impact figures reveal today.

Professor Kevin Fenton, England’s Director of Public Health in London, said: “This is now a crucial moment for London and the wider South East region. We know that a rapid escalation of cases will lead to more hospitalizations and, inevitably, deaths.

“Cases are increasing in those at risk over 60 and while there is a mixed picture of case numbers in different counties, we are now experiencing sustained growth in almost all of them, as well as parts of neighboring Essex and Kent.

“With the vaccine rollout already underway in London and across the country, we can now see a light at the end of the tunnel. But we still have a job to do to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe through Christmas and the New Year. “

He added: “The actions of each of us today will have a direct impact on the direction in which London is moving. That is why we must all come together as one city to move up the curve, reduce the transmission rate, and ensure that we do not face a crisis in our hospitals in the coming weeks.

“To support these efforts, we are increasing the availability of testing citywide and are already conducting massive asymptomatic pilots at 15 locations.”
