Yesterday, CD Projekt Red had a huge emergency call with investors discussing the status of Cyberpunk 2077 and what it means for their DLC and multiplayer plans. It’s no secret that the game’s release came with a host of bugs, I’ve experienced a ton on PC myself, but for next-gen console gamers, Cyberpunk is in an even more sorry state. CDPR says its focus now is on improving the base game, but there are concerns that the amount of work involved could affect the new content planned for the next few years.
“After three delays, we were too focused on launching the game. We underestimate the scale and complexity of the issues, ”said Adam Kiciński, chairman of the CDPR board.
“We are ignoring the signs of the need for additional time to refine the game on the latest generation base consoles. It was the wrong approach and against our business philosophy. “
The next part of the recording is a bit confusing, but it talks about how the developers have “lost the trust of the players” as well as the reputation they have been building. To fix it, it reiterates the same points made in the statement CDPR released yesterday, saying that big patches are on the way for the Xbone and PS4 versions of Cyberpunk, with regular updates and fixes coming to PC as well.
“We will do everything possible to show that we stand by our values,” he adds. “We really hope that our efforts will help rebuild the trust we have lost.”
During the next 40 minutes of the call, questions came in from investors who wanted to know how Cyberpunk’s problems could have been avoided and if any of this would affect their ability to get the upcoming DLC and multiplayer for the next two years.
I admit it’s what interests me the most, I’d love to race through Night City with my friends sooner rather than later, but CDPR seems a bit unsure about their multiplayer launch plans right now.
“It is too early to judge,” says Kiciński. “We don’t know yet. We are now focused on improving Cyberpunk and will discuss this early next year. “
Unfortunately, another businessman wonders if CDPR should aim to launch Cyberpunk’s multiplayer in 2023, as opposed to the vaguely expected 2022. Kiciński repeats his previous point, saying “no dates have been confirmed yet” and will discuss it in January.
CDPR is asked if the game could have been made with further testing before launch. Kiciński says that while it was not “a major source of problems,” CDPR did less testing than they would have liked due to Covid-19. Most of the tests were done in-house because CDPR was able to send the kit to its staff working from home, while the external tests were more difficult because it would have had to be done in testing centers.
Another investor asks whether having more developers overall would have made a difference, to which board member Michał Nowakowski says no: bringing in more people wouldn’t have helped much.
Nowakowski adds that the reasons the next-gen versions of Cyberpunk are so badly damaged is because they “focused on the performance of the next generation and the PC rather than the current generation.”
Yet despite that focus, players across all platforms have reported many jank, from crashes to disappearing cocks. For many gamers on PC, the game-breaking things seem to be pretty minimal, although they definitely still exist. Personally, Jackie went through some walls, which made me need to restart missions, which is not particularly fun.
CDPR has already released a small patch to fix some issues, but it seems they still have a lot of work ahead of them.
