A new form of coronavirus has been identified in the UK, with more than 1,000 people infected with the new variant of the disease.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock confirmed that the UK had found a new coronavirus variant, and analysis shows that the variant is growing faster than the existing coronavirus.

Hancock said more than 1,000 cases have been identified in southern England, and the numbers are increasing rapidly.

He also confirmed that the variant had been found in 60 local authority areas.

He said: “In recent days, thanks to our world-class genomic capabilities in the UK, we have identified a new coronavirus variant that may be associated with the more rapid spread in southern England.

“Initial analysis suggests that this variant is growing faster than existing variants.

“We have currently identified more than 1,000 cases with this variant predominantly in the south of England, although cases have been identified in almost 60 different local authority areas.

“And the numbers are increasing rapidly.”

Hancock said the variant was similar to other variants found in other countries and that it had been reported to the World Health Organization.

He said Public Health England would continue its research on the new mutation.

But Hancock assured people that there was nothing to suggest that the variant caused a more serious illness or that it did not respond to a vaccine.

He said: “I must emphasize at this point that there is currently nothing to suggest that this variant is more likely to cause severe disease and the latest clinical advice is that it is highly unlikely that this mutation will not respond to a vaccine, but it shows that we have They have to be vigilant and follow the rules and everyone must take personal responsibility not to spread this virus. “

He added: “I have to tell the House that over the last week, we have seen very sharp and exponential increases in the virus in London, Kent, parts of Essex and Hertfordshire.

“We do not know to what extent this is due to the new variant, but regardless of its cause, we have to take swift and decisive action which, unfortunately, are absolutely essential to control this deadly disease while the vaccine is launched.”

Hancock then confirmed that Greater London and parts of Essex and Hertfordshire would be placed on Level 3 to help control the virus.
