The Bristol homeowner in which Banksy spray painted a mural is going ahead with the sale of the property despite the appearance of the artwork, her son said.
On Friday, ITV News West Country reported that the owners said they had pulled out of the sale after the street artist confirmed the “Aachoo!” the job was his, a move that could make property prices skyrocket.
The story was followed by various newspapers. However, on Saturday, Nick Makin said it was not true that his mother, Aileen Makin, had recalled the townhouse on Vale Street, Totterdown.
He told BBC Bristol: “When you wake up to the tabloids saying your house is now worth £ 5 million, you have to think about what you are doing. It increases the value, and you have to take a moment to think about it, but it doesn’t change anything in terms of selling the house for us. “
The template mural, which appeared Thursday morning, shows a woman in a headscarf holding a handkerchief, but drops her cane and purse while losing her false teeth while sneezing.
Makin said the sale procedures had been “suspended” for 48 hours after the discovery and that buyers and real estate agents were “completely understanding.”
He said “a lot of nasty comments” had been made online after some tabloid newspapers reported that the family was pulling out of the sale. But Makin said they had actually spent money protecting it, installing an alarm system and putting a transparent cover over the artwotk.
“Not only has it not earned us £ 5 million, as the newspapers were saying, it has actually cost us money to protect it,” he said. “We believe that you should protect yourself and stay where you are.”
Makin said the family was exploring the possibility of inserting a covenant into the house’s deeds to ensure Banksy’s mural remains where it is “or, if it were to be removed, to be moved to Bristol city hall or the museum, so it can be kept in its proper condition, safe and in the right hands. “
Banksy confirmed on his website and Instagram account Thursday afternoon that the job was his. In a photograph posted by him, the woman appears to be blowing on a garbage container and a man’s umbrella while sneezing.
