The Supreme Court has rejected an impromptu lawsuit filed by the state of Texas, and backed by Donald Trump, which sought to challenge the election results in four other states.
Friday’s firing has dealt another crushing blow to Trump’s quest to undo his electoral loss to Joe Biden.
Texas was suing the states of Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin in an unlikely offer, calling the changes the states had made to election procedures illegal amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The lawsuit was backed by Trump and more than 100 Republicans in Congress, including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.
The court order marked the second this week in which it rejected Republican requests to participate in the outcome of the 2020 election. Justices rejected an appeal from Pennsylvania Republicans on Tuesday.
On Thursday, the states named in the lawsuit urged the Supreme Court to reject it, calling the case a publicity stunt that had no factual or legal basis and made “false” claims.
“What Texas is doing in this proceeding is asking this court to reconsider a mass of unfounded claims about problems with the election that have already been considered and rejected by this court and other courts,” Josh Shapiro, Democratic Pennsylvania Attorney General wrote in a presentation to the nine judges.
The electoral college meets Monday to formally elect Biden as the next president.
