The UK has recorded 20,964 more cases of COVID-19, an increase of 4,386 compared to yesterday’s figure of 16,578.
It is the highest daily increase since mid-November and brings the total number of infections during the pandemic to 1,787,783.
Other 516 coronavirus-Related deaths have also been reported in the last 24-hour period, a slight drop from the 533 deaths confirmed on Wednesday.
Since the start of the crisis, a total of 63,082 people in the UK have died within 28 days of testing positive for COVID-19.
Separate figures from statistical agencies where COVID-19 has been mentioned on the death certificate show that there have now been 79,000 deaths related to the virus.

The capital had the highest average infection rate in the country (191.8 per 100,000 people) during the week of November 30 to December 6, according to Public Health England’s weekly surveillance survey.
This is an increase of 158.1 per 100.00 in the prior week.
