Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer faces a battle to keep the faith of his players, according to a report.
The Red Devils crashed out of the Champions League on Tuesday after a 3-2 loss to RB Leipzig. United needed a point in Germany, but after falling 2-0 in the first half, they did not recover.
Solskjaer’s men finished third in Group H and as such have fallen in the Europa League. In fact, the Norwegian is now under pressure to win the competition.
According to the Manchester evening newsHowever, serious concerns have been raised about faith in Solskjaer.
The newspaper says “some players” believe the coach is the “source” of the club’s recent troubles. What’s more, they feel that he is ‘to blame’ for his recent form.
Another sentiment within the squad is that Solskjaer and the club must make important decisions about a key duo.
The first, perhaps more urgent, is the future of Paul Pogba. The Frenchman’s agent said Monday that his client is “unhappy.” and “you have to change teams” in the January transfer window.
Experts have criticized the timing of the comments, on the eve of the game in Germany and the Manchester derby on Saturday.
But Manchester evening news says that while Pogba remains a “popular” figure at Old Trafford, the club should not stand in the way of his desire to leave.
In fact, there is reportedly a ‘growing acceptance’ within United’s boardroom that they will have to sell it. The Red Devils He recently activated his 12-month option on Pogba, extending his contract until 2022.
Solskjaer Faces De Gea’s Ax Calls
Meanwhile, the newspaper adds that another decision that some players want Solskjaer to make is the removal of goalkeeper David de Gea.
Certain sections of the team feel that Dean Henderson should win a team race.
The Englishman made his full Premier League debut last Saturday, but some stars want him to keep his place.
De Gea suffered a drop in form at the end of last season, with Henderson on loan at Sheffield United.
But while the Spaniard’s efforts have improved since the arrival of number 2, some players feel he should give way.
United are heading into Saturday’s derby with Manchester City after winning both Premier League ties between the clubs last season.
