England has received a strong signal that winter has truly arrived with a warning of “severe” cold weather for the next few days.
Public Health England warned of freezing temperatures as the Met Office forecast a cold snap that will sweep across many parts of the country through Thursday morning.
“Severe cold weather conditions” are expected to hit the North East, Yorkshire and the Humber, East Midlands, as well as the East and South East of England, PHE said.
There is also a yellow weather warning for icy fog until 2am Wednesday for areas such as Norfolk, Essex, Suffolk, Kent and Medway.
Dr Ishani Kar-Purkayastha, a public health consultant at PHE, said that people should try to heat their homes to at least 18 ° C, particularly those over 65 and people with reduced mobility or a health condition. .
She said, “Keep moving, too, if you can. Get up, walk, and sort out household chores throughout the day to keep yourself warm. Food is also a vital source of energy, so have plenty of hot foods and drinks.
“Remember to keep an eye on frail or elderly neighbors and relatives at this time, especially if they live alone, and remember to follow COVID-19 social distancing guidelines when caring for others.”
The Met Office said areas within the yellow weather advisory will see the fog “get thicker and more widespread this afternoon (Tuesday) and for a while tonight, although there will not be fog everywhere.”
