The M25 motorway was closed in Buckinghamshire after a ‘serious multi-vehicle collision’ around 7am on Tuesday 8 December.
Around 11 vehicles were involved in the accident on the clockwise carriageway, which closed just after Junction 16, the interchange with the M40.
Although the lanes reopened at 9.15am, significant delays continued, with several kilometers of congestion reported in the area.
The accident involved 12 men in 11 vehicles, one of which had to be released by firefighters.
The vehicles are reported to have included eight cars, a truck, a pickup truck and a caravan near the Chalfont Viaduct.
All those involved were evaluated by paramedics after the incident.
The accident was attended by crews from Gerrards Cross, Beaconsfield and Langley.
At the time, Highways England said: “The M25 in Buckinghamshire is closed clockwise between J16 and J17 near Gerrards Cross while emergency services deal with a serious collision.
“There are likely to be delays in approaching closure, and additional travel times are also expected on detour routes. Please allow more time for your journey if traveling in the area or consider alternative routes.”
Elsewhere at the time, three lanes were closed following a crash on the southbound M3 in Surrey.
